Memorial Day Food and Wine
Memorial Day is one of my favorite days of the year. It is the official start of the outdoor food and wine season in New Jersey. The beginning of Summer, my favorite time of year.
But more importantly it is a day of remembrance, to honor those who have served our country so well. This Memorial Day is very important to many people who have lost loved ones in the present and recent wars. Our heart goes out to them.
And in their honor we celebrate, I think that is a good and healthy thing to do.
What makes a perfect Memorial Day Picnic. Warm sunny weather of course, which it seems we will be enjoying this weekend. Good friends, relatives, good food and wine.
I lean toward the classics, deviled eggs, pickles, chips, salads of many kinds. A crisp Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, or other spring wines are delicious with these fresh selections.
Food and Wine has got a great line up Mem-Day recipes in their current issue, Cookout Party. 60 recipes in all. Starting off with the essential element of any picnic, the Classic Beef Burger.
And how about the all mighty all American hot dog. There are so many
variations for serving them up. Ask the Hot Dog Council or our local Amazing Hot Dog in Verona.
With either I like a bright Zinfandel, or a hearty Malbec, what ever you choose make sure it has body but not to heavy, I think a Cabernet or Barolo are to strong. Check out the Zin Zealot or Ronn Wiegand's Reviews for more on these wines.
During this weekend I plan to visit Waterloo Village for the Blues and Wine Festival. 17 New Jersey vineyards are showcasing their wines. Honestly, I have no expectations, but If I am pleasantly surprised I will be sure to let you know. If you can't make this event there is another big NJ wine tasting on June 3rd and 4th. New Jersey Festival of Wine at Alba Vineyards.
