I have often drank and dined at the popular Irish Pub Egan & Sons in Montclair, NJ. But, for whatever reason have not gotten around to writing about the place. Last night we had a salad, burgers and beers at the bar of their location in West Orange that opened a year ago.
We enjoyed our dinner. Thankfully, West Orange does not get nearly as crowded or as noisy as the Montclair location. It is just as charming when it comes to atmosphere and the service is passable, food decent and they offer a good selection of mainstream European drafts.
A lot of people love Egans so it is probably just me. The iceburg wedge salad that we order came out looking as beautiful as can be. We were really excited to taste it. The greens were fresh, crisp, and tasty as they should be, but the dressing and blue cheese chunks were good but lacked the intencity flavor I would expect.
Diana ordered a Blue Moon on draft. It came out in a really nice cold tall Blue Moon glass. It was delicious. I had a Black and Tan, Guinness Stout and Bass Ale which was not bad and then a New Castle, which was fine. As I said I personally prefer craft beers. It is impossible to mass produce really good beer. The once fine ales served at Egans are now all produced by multi-national companies far from their original roots. Guinness is owned by Diageo which at least is based in London, Bass Ale is owned by Molson Coors Brewing Company, of Canada and Denver, Co, who also owns Blue Moon. New Castle is produced by Heineken International of the Amsterdam, Netherlands.
We had two burgers, the meat was quite good. It is served on a tasty roll. There is a nice selection of cheeses, caramelized onions or crispy bacon bits to add. We ordered both medium rare, one burger was served medium and mine closer to well done. I guess I should be happy, the burgers we had a Pal's Cabin a couple of weeks ago, were ordered medium rare and came out almost raw.
They do come with really good fries. Malt vinegar is available if you like that, I do. Nothing was left on our plates so I can't say were displeased. Just could have been better.
