Our quest to visit every good place for beer in New Jersey is getting larger and larger as we discover more and more bars and breweries that are truly embracing the explosive growth of craft beer brewing that is sweeping the United States.
We become even more excited about this adventure after our week in Minneapolis, a fine place for craft beer. Since then Diana is on a quest to find a alternate for her new favorite ale, Surly Furious, which can only be found there.
On Friday before Labor Day our quest took us to The Coppermne Pub in Lyndhurst, NJ. What a place!!!!
Coppermine looks like a dive bar outside and it looks like a dive bar inside but the 20 taps and selection of bottles as well as the clientele are first rate. We certainly did not look like regulars, I was dressed pretty casual in shorts and a t-shirt but Diana was still pretty dressed up from work. Vito asked us what we would like and was seemed a little surprised when he quickly discovered that we are true beer connoisseurs.
I saw a new brewer on the menu called Kane Brewing Company with a Rye Ale, a type of beer I really like. It is called Afterglow. Turns out that Kane is a new brewer in Ocean, NJ that just opened a couple of weeks ago. they say their focus is "on American Style and Belgian Influenced ales." and that all of their "handcrafted beers will be unfiltered and brewed locally in their custom built two vessel brewhouse located in Monmouth County." I liked this beer alot.
Diana explained her mission to find a beer like Surley Furious, which has a nice hoppy flavor with striking grapefruit undertones, to Vito. He offered her another Kane brew called Single Fin, a Belgian-style Blond ale. She liked it.
Coppermine serves no food and we were hungry so we did not stay long. But before we did we got to know a few of the regulars who warmly welcomed us and encouraged us to come back after they learned of our deep interest in craft beers. You can order in food from a number of local restaurants while you enjoy Coppermines great selection of beer. And it seems a bunch of the regulars hold a pot-luck dinner on Wednesday nights.
