There is something so wonderful about waterside dining. Think of your favorite places. Was it on the Cape, in the Caribbean, perhaps the Riviera, or the Florida Keys? Those are some of my favorite places that come to mind. And all the pleasant memories, vacations, holidays, sun and fresh sea air and the delicious fish.
Some in-land restaurants try to capture this magic, Joe's Crab Shack, and the like. But we have a place in Montclair that really gets it right.
I had heard so many good things about Fin that I was quick to suggest it for a dinner last week with friends, Anne and Will.
The entrance is deep and feels like your on a dock to your yacht. As you enter there is an abundant display of fresh seafood of every kind on ice. The very professional wait staff are decked out (no pun intended) in kakis and white t-shirts like they just got back from the beach.
We started our meal with a very fine Louis Latour Montagny 1erCru 2005 that Will brought. It was so perfect for the fresh, melt in your mouth raw oysters with fancy names like, Naked Cowboys, STing Rays, Eagle Creaks. A nice offering of East and West Coast.
For dinner we enjoyed the Crispy Salmon, done just right. I had the Pacific Cod done on the wood grill, with grilled Aspargus. The wood flavor from the grill is so delicious. We also had the Swordfish done on the wood grill and while the fish was delicious it was unfortunately a little overdone. Lastly we had the 7 Spiced Big Eye
Tuna with soba noodles, stir fried vegetables, sweet soy & scallion vinaigrette.
Oh and I almost forgot the wonderful Lobster Truffle Mac & Cheese, which was very good although I thought a little more truffle oil would
make it better. The menu has many options so you are bound to find something pleasing. Fin carefully hand selects only the freshest seasonal seafood from Hunts Point Market.
By now we had moved on to two other wines a wonderful Château De Nages La Réserve Blanc from the Rhone Valley and a favorite red, Wolftrap from South Africa which is a good red for fish and light meats.
We can't wait to get back to Fin, it is really that good.
