Mes Reves (My Dream) French Bistro on Broad Street in Bloomfield is just turning a year old. It is the beautiful dream of Quang Tran, chef de cuisine of Mes Reves and his wife and co-owner Tammie Tran.
Mes Reves serves a classic French menu made with ingredients from the best purveyors and served with a stylish flair. From the lushly comfortable space, impeccable service and delicious food we enjoyed every moment. And of course the French wine was very good.
I promised that we would be coming by for dinner soon but 2011 was a very busy year and there always seemed to be another place we had to be. I am sure we won't let much time pass before we dine here again.
Looking at the menu on their web site I knew I had to have some good French wine, a dry Sauvignon Blanc from Sancere or a crisp Burgundian Chardonnay would be perfect; along with a red, probably a Pinot Noir or Syrah. I stopped by Magnolia's in Upper Montclair which does not have a large French selection, but what they have is all very good. I picked these two.
Domaine Pastou Sancerre Blanc Les Boucalts "This wine is a perennial favorite, delivering minerally driven, beautiful Sancerre fruit for an amazingly good price. Sauvignon Blanc Region France : Loire Valley : Sancerre" and and Chateau Marechaux Bordeaux Superieur 2006 a beautiful earthy Merlot with a touch of Cabernet.
For dinner we enjoyed three appetizers. A perfect Seared Foie Gras with sautéed butternut squash, fried leeks, and an enticing sauterne sauce; the Seared Sea Scallops with tomato concassé, shiitake mushrooms, fried leeks, and a fragrant saffron cream sauce and we could not resist tasting the Mushroom Tart on flaky puff pastry with wild mushrooms and a rich mushroom demi sauce.
And for our mains we had the Pan Seared Salmon with roasted herbed potatoes, and shiitake leeks, with wonderful grilled asparagus, and a silky bercy sauce. I had the Pan Seared Duck Breast that is served with almond wild rice and grilled endive. The duck is accented with a port demi sauce. I ordered it medium but should have asked for rare. Oh so delicious.
We also tasted three desserts. A Mango Sorbet with a fruit reduction sauce, the Creme Brulee with chocolate and Pistachio and the creamy Flan.
We give Mes Reves two thumbs up and say please never wake up, just keep on dreaming.
