The owners of Park Street Cafe in Montclair have gracefully revealed their South American personality in a nice new Brazilian restaurant called Samba.
They have morphed their place that serves great breakfast and lunch to take us to Southern America to enjoy the great cuisine from that part of the world.
The Samba creation has been open just a few weeks, but Nell and I really enjoyed our dinner there. Other people have been raving as well.
There are some improvements to be made, but we love the diversity of cuisine.
The dining room is warm and romantic, reminded me of Argentina, it has a rich country feel that is very cozy. The service could be a little tighter, a little too casual, but we are very fussy about that. Nell, when she is not traveling the world, serves for a living and she is one of the best.
We really enjoyed two appetizers, the first is called Salgadinhos Sortidos which are described as little pastries, one chicken, one cheese, and one beef, the other was small chicken pieces perfectly sauteed in garlic and herbs, very good.
We had some Mexican beer, no time to get Brazilian, and a nice Bonarda called Mariena from Argentina we like. There are actually some very good wines coming out of Brazil but they are hard to find.
For our entree I had the pork chops which came with cooked plantains covered with Yuca flour and some very nice garlicky greens. This was very very good. Nell had the thin steak with caramelized onions which was good but a little over cooked. She ordered rare and it came out more medium to well. And the caramelized onions, well they were good if you called them sauteed onions. Caramelized onions are like Risotto, very few restaurants get them right. Mainly because it takes a great deal of patience to make great caramelized onions or great risotto. It can't be rushed. Taste my caramelized onions or Diana's risotto some day and you will know what I mean.
We passed on the desserts because we were kind of full, but we were brought a passion fruit dessert that was just out of this world. A perfect end to the meal.
