Honestly, I really have always wanted to like NJ wines. I'm no wine snob that insists on Napa or Bordeaux, I enjoy wine from all over the world. I just haven't found many made in my home state of New Jersey that I've liked.
I've watched jealously as NY wines from the Finger Lakes and the North Fork have gained acclaim. So you can imagine my delight when I found New Jersey wines that I really liked.
It was at the recent NJ Wine and Food Festival where I met Todd Wuerker the proprietor and wine maker of Hawks Haven Vineyard in Cape May, NJ.
Todd prouldly presented his wines in the Marketplace Lunch Tent where we enjoyed a delicous selection of regionally produced artisanal breads, cheeses, and cuisine.
I tasted his Pinot Grigio first and was really impressed but the quality of this wine, it exhibited wine making skill much greater than I would expect from such a young vineyard. Todd is a farmer at heart and enjoys the long hours that the work demands, it's in his family roots.
Of the reds I liked the Merlot best and enjoyed the Syrah.
It turns out that Cape May with its southern cool breezes, bright sun and sandy soils is a great grape growing area. Hawk Haven is Cape May County's newest and probably most romantic vineyard and tasting room. There are four wineries in Cape May I believe, so it it is truly worth a trip. Cape May Winery is worth checking out while your there. Not to mention all the great B & B's and restaurants in Cape May.
Tasting Room is open daily year round offering wine sales, wine tasting, wine by the glass and wine themed gifts.
