Montclair, has quite a few Japanese restaurants to choose from and when you ask locals which one they like the best they usually have a pretty definite opinion. I am often surprised how many people only know about our downtown options, when we think the best is in Upper Montclair.
We have been loving patrons of Dai-Kichi since its opening in 1988. Our kids practically grew up there and developed their palate over the years from the simply delicious yaki udon noodle dishes to exotic sushi rolls. This kid in particular has been a fan since he was 4 when he would only eat oshinko pickles, beef negamaki with the scallions removed and white rice, today however...
A consistent Best of Essex winner and subject of many favorable reviews Dai-Kichi (Excellent Luck) is our favorite in Montclair.
These are two of my favorites which are very reasonably priced. Their wine list is also very well selected to pair with Japanese dishes and nicely priced as well. You can have Asian beer too.
Talking about bargains, you can't beat the lunch specials like this very satisfying bento box for $10.50.
I can never resist their delicious hijiki black seaweed salad and their wonderfully miso soup. I've never dined in Japan but I have enjoyed Japanese restaurants all over the US and these two dishes are best in class.
Their sushi and sashimi is always fresh and delicious. We love the entrees like the tempuras and teriyakis but the special rolls like this Panda Roll and interesting creations like the Sushi Sandwich are where the creativity really shines.
Sorry my pictures are not better.
If you want something really special order their Tuna Tartare Napoleon it is amazing.
