Sahadi's Fine Foods has been on Atlantic Avenue for over 50 years. In fact Sahadi's have been bringing fine foods to New York since 1895. This proud tradition is reflected vividly in the store's abundant selection of fine foods and in the enthusiastic throngs of customers that loyally frequent this gourmet's treasure.
We traveled all the way from Montclair, NJ to experience and stock up.
The store is Middle Eastern at heart but offers products carefully selected from purveyors all over the world Here is what we found.

It was a glorious evening and for our first outdoor dinner of 2009 we made this recipe from Bon Apetite for dinner.
Grilled Chicken Salad with Radishes, Cucumbers, and Tarragon Pesto.
I was low on white wine so I made a quick stop at Home Liquors on my way back from Verona Farms Fruit and Vegetable Market in Verona, NJ, where I bought the ingredients for the salad. At Home I found this great Gruner Veltliner in the cooler for $9.00 bucks. The wine is made by Erich & Maria Berger in Kremstal, Weinland, Austria.
I thought it would go well with the Tarragon pesto. It was perfect.

My good friend Gil Winter brought this simple but absolutely delicious hors d'oeuvre to a party Diana threw for my birthday.
Sesame crispbread, with a delicate layer of saga blue cheese and a dollop of fig preserves.
It is irresitable. And it goes with many white or red wines.

A few months ago, Kings began offering these exotic gourmet salts. Priced at 9 to 12 dollars for a 4.4 ounce jar they seemed like a real luxury. I was very intrigued but the price point did not appeal to me.
I am particular about salt, we have no Morton Salt in our kitchen, Diamond Kosher or Sea Salt Crystals in the ready to use grinders is preferred. Yet I asked myself can salt really be worth what amounts to $20 to $50 a pound? Morton is less than a buck, 26 oz for 60 cents, Diamond Kosher is 1.89 for 40 oz, the Sea Salt complete with grinder is a whopping 2.49 for 2.5 oz.
They went on a sale and on a lark I bought one, now we are hooked. They are that good.

Do you remember Horn and Hardart Automats? I loved their chicken pot pie. Then Swanson came out with their frozen pot pie, which my mother fed us often, to the point of never again. In later years my love of chicken pot pie was revived. Since then I have been on the look out for really good chicken pot pie.
Here are some that I have found.
