Founded in 1919, La Scolca vineyard made a bold move after WWII and began producing only quality wine becoming the first producer of quality Gavi that later would be known as one of the most historic white wine producers in Italy. Today, Chiara Soldati, continues that tradition of great wine with her father Giorgio, the founder’s great-grandson.
Cortese the grape of Gavi was produced as a low-alcohol, thin and sour wines that was sold to other producers as a base for sparkling wines. The Soldatis pioneered modern, controlled winemaking that allowed the subtle fruit of the Cortese grape to become the beautiful and coveted wine that it is today .
Today La Scolca adheres to European Union regulations which encourage conversion to organic farming practices to reduce carbon footprint and other negative impact on the environment from both farming and vinification.
As a well educated woman she recalls "I have read the Bacchae of Euripides. I remember well the concept that, Zeus gave man the gift of wine to help them forget the pain, and also the statement that in the absence of the wine there is no love." And so Chiara brings us love.
From Wine Spectator | April 30th, 2011: "La Scolca's Gavi dei Gavi Black Label is synonymous with the appellation. The estate is the oldest in the region and the first to export its Gavi as a dry white wine. Indeed, most Americans, when they think of Gavi, think of La Scolca's Black Label, a reputation earned through the estate's success in Italy. "Much of our success abroad is because people know about our wine from here, in Italy," says Giorgio Soldati."
