Got to Xai Xai one of the fabulous new wine bars featured in that NY Times article, mentioned a few posts ago.
From the moment you step across the threshold of this beguiling and captivating place, you feel immediately transported to South Africa.
Xai Xai (pronounced "shy shy") is tucked away on a quiet section of West 51st street near Ninth Avenue. Named after a small beach town in Mozambique its exudes relaxed cool.
All 80 of their wines are carefully hand chosen from South Africa. The foods are tenderly prepared, offerings include a delightful selection of traditional and contemporary African inspired dishes.
We met one of the charming owners Tanya Hira who turned us on to some very pleasing South African wine.
A Sauvignon Blanc, Clouds was amazingly bright and flavor full. Perfect with the Pate Trio of Chickpea-Pepperdew, Smoked Snoek & Chicken Liver Pate served with tasty bread. Clouds Sauvignon Blanc is fermented cold and bottled early. The wine is crisp and fruity with vibrant gooseberry, grapefruit and tropical notes.
We also tried two reds from an outstanding South African vineyard, Tumara Pinotage and a Malbec.
Tumara wines are produced at the Bellevue Estate, which released the world's first commercial Pinotage in 1953. Now, the over 50 year old vines continue to produce award winning pinotage for four generations. Vanilla, coconut, plum and raspberries on the nose, followed by layers of ripe, complex fruit on the palate. A big, well balanced wine with a long clean finish.
We enjoyed these with the Pastry Plate, meat and vegetarian pies served with Mrs. Balls Chutney
