Picture this. There is a land which was once the cradle of the richest and most famous ancient Greek colony, Akragas. A place in the Mediteranean sea at the toe of Italy facing Tunisia. It was the home of Mediterranean mother goddess Madre Dea, Tanit the goddess of war and fertility and Hera, the queen of all the gods. It is on the western coast of Sicily and here grows a magnificent yet humble grape called Inzolia.
A varietal confined mainly to Sicily, Inzolia, whose etymology is uncertain, is golden yellow coloured and seems to contain the rays of the sun. From these exhaulted lands comes through the passion and skill of the wine makers of d'Alessandro Azienda Agricola and oenologist Tonino Guzzo, d'Alessandro Inzolia an extrordinary wine worthy of the most refined feasts.
The wine has "hints of citrus combined with fragrances of white flower to create a fine, balanced taste with just the right amount of acidity."
We had one word as we tasted this wine, "Wow." It is a very likely candidate for our favorite summer wine. With a low alcohol level of 12% it can be enjoyed all day. It is a perfect pairing for fish appetizers and main courses, raw fish, grilled fish or sushi.
With a civilisation dating back to the ancient Greeks, Sicily has been conquered successively by the Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, Spanish and Bourbons. This has led to a fascinating melange of architectural, artistic and cultural influences set in spectacular mountain and coastal scenery.
Inzolia (also known as Ansonica, ‘Nzolia, and Insolia) is one of Sicily’s great and highly versatile white grapes. While it is often used as a blending grape (with varieties like Grillo and Catarratto), Fresh in the mouth, with delicate fruit flavors and balanced acidity, Inzolia is one of Southern Italy's best-selling white wines.
I am sure you will enjoy it.
