A fabulous dinner at the fabulous Hundred Acres restaurant and Bar in Soho began with sensuous cocktails and a pour of this hedonistic whiskey, Alibi. It began with a cocktail called “Not Guilty” of course made with Alibi, Broadbent Madiera and fresh Lime. A decent cocktail but I had to get to the root. When I sipped this ultra smooth brown liquor I was amazed. It is a 90 Proof blended America Whiskey that is the creation of Panache Beverages who brought you Wodka Vodka, Alchemia Infused Vodka, and now Alibi. The goal was to create a very high quality whiskey to just be enjoyed. Not debated or fussed over by whiskey snobs.
It is a Corn-based whiskey that contains other grains like rye and malted barley, distilled and then aged in New American Oak Barrels by LDI in Indiana, a distillery who, for those in the know, makes awesome whisky for the likes of big names like Bulleit, Templeton, Filibuster, High West, James E. Pepper, Redemption, and Smooth Ambler. Some are among Hundred Acres the 19 outstanding Whiskeys they pour.
Hundred Acres exudes unpretentious cool and a driving but easy vibe. The bar is well tended and we spotted actor David Costabile and other downtown celebs in the crowd.
The Alibi was shared when other friends arrived and lighted their eyes. It’s got a deep toasted marshmallow flavor, with pralines and a smokey sweet finish. Loved it.
As Maxim says ”it's a gem that makes you proud to be American. You can drink it neat or on the rocks, but you don't need to be a whiskey snob to love it. Oh, and it looks pretty damn cool in your liquor cabinet.
As the people at Panache say, “Alibi is an elixir for the flawed human spirit in all of us, a tonic for sin and an excuse for vulnerability. We created the spirit because we know mankind needs an out, a way to feel better about those poor decisions that will invariably be made.” I am so with that.
